Dehydrated Sourdough

What is dehydrated starter? And why do I want it?

Dehydrated sourdough starter is a versatile form of sourdough. It's a great way to preserve your treasured culture. Unlike wet starter, it doesn't need immediate attention. With a lifespan lasting up to six months, dehydrated starter can be shipped safely and enjoyed whenever you activate it. To activate your starter you do a few simple things...

Add 1 TBS of dried starter to 2 TBS of water. Let it sit and disolve. Next add 1 TBS of flour and 1 TBS of water (it should be the consistency of thick cake batter). Mix well- allowing lots of air to get into the mixture (TIP: to activate your starter at a faster rate add a pinch of sugar as well). Let this mixture rest overnight in a jar or bowl covered with a dampt cloth. In the morning, add 1 TBS of flour and 3 tsp. of water to the mixture. Mix well and continue to let it sit out (covered) in a warm and safe place. Repeat this step for 3 days or until your starter is bubbly and you have about 1 cup. Refrigerate in a jar or sealed container until next use.

Step One: Gather tools and ingredients

Step Two: Add 1 TBS of starter to glass bowl

Step Three: Add 1-3 TBS of water

Step Four: Add at least 1 TBS of flour and 1 TBS of water to the bowl
(until mixture is thick like cake mix).

Step Five: Mix well

Step Six: Cover with a cloth and keep in a warm/safe place

Once your starter is activated the possibilities are endless. Enjoy prestles, bread, buns, rolls, pizza or sweets. Stay tuned for more tips and recipes!
